Some Genuinely Useful Gift Ideas

April 18th, 2010 by pacapao

How often have you given, or been given truly useless presents in the guise of handy time or work saving gadgets?

Hopefully this short article will help you fight the clutter, and choose something really useful.

There comes a time when it seems really appropriate to give someone a tool of some sort. The classic situations are wedding gifts, birthdays, or often when someone first moves out of home or moves into a new house. Here are a few suggestions for genuinely useful items.

1. A new toilet brush. The old one usually gets chucked out when you move, and a new one gets forgotten. It’s a good, cheap gift. And gets a laugh every time!

2. A door mat. Everyone needs one, and I guarantee it will get used more often than a doughnut maker or comedy ashtray.

3. A wall clock for the kitchen, or anywhere else for that matter. Again people don’t buy one themselves, and it gets put at the bottom of the list. Go for something plain and functional.

4. A new set of washing up brush, pot scourer, dish cloth and detergent. Kind of like the toilet brush point, these ones often get thrown out in a move, or otherwise will look old and crusty in a new(er) home. They will thank you for a crisp new set.

These are just some quick ideas – there are plenty more, just think “what do I always need?” rather than opening a catalogue. Have fun! Remember, getting a laugh out of someone will be worth more, and will be remembered far longer than a stocking filler.

Small Bathrooms

April 15th, 2010 by pacapao

Whether your home has a combined usage room, or a separate bath and WC, it is likely that it is a small space. How can you most efficiently and economically make use of this utilitarian room, while making it more pleasing to the eye?

First consider what, exactly, your needs for this room are. Then you can map out how to best use the space you have available. One of the most useful tools in doing this will be a measuring tape. If you plan to buy a new suite or a new piece of bathroom furniture, make sure it will fit before you buy!

The WC is generally a very small room, but will also likely be used by guests in your home. It is best kept uncluttered. Each thing added to the room will remove visual space. You may install a corner basket or a wall mounted soap dish next to the basin to hold soap without cluttering the basin itself. It can be more space effient to buy a standing toilet-roll holder that can hold several rolls while having one available for use, eliminating the need to find other storage. Some models will hold a toilet brush as well. After these few things are taken care of, think about how you’d like the room to look. Is there enough light? Is the paint fresh? A few decorative accents are all that is needed in such a small space to make it pleasant.

In the bath, our storage needs are greater. First think of both who uses the room, and how. A mirrored medicine cupboard in place of a simple mirror over the basin may fill most of your daily storage needs, is easy to install, and there are many different designs available to suit both your taste and your budget.

A proper bath needs a decent supply of towels, and a place to put them. If your space is insufficient for this, what can you do? While you likely have a towel rail already, extra towels can be attractively stored rolled neatly in a large basket under the basin without taking up much space. You may also be able to find a small cabinet to fit under the basin to use for storage. Keeping these things tucked out of sight and the room free of clutter will help make it seem larger.

Good lighting will also make the most of any small room. If you have dark corners, consider putting in a new fixture, or, if possible, a higher wattage bulb to eliminate shadows.

When decorating small spaces, fewer items are better. Again, think of how you use the room. If you use the bath to relax, subtle hues are appropriate. If you are using the bath to freshen up and get ready for the day, accents of brighter, more vivid colours may be in order. Use these touches to personalize your bathroom, and make the most of the smallest room in your home.

Eating Safely – Tips You Need to Know

April 14th, 2010 by pacapao

Eating safely means ensuring that you prepare your food under conditions that do not allow the growth of bacteria.

The bacteria that cause food-related illnesses need water, food, air, warmth, and time in order to survive. If one of these factors is removed, the bacteria stop growing.

Practical food tips

Always wash your hands before handling food, preferably with liquid soap. While cooking if you have to stop to handle animals or use the toilet ensure that you wash your hands afterward.

In order to prevent germs from spreading make sure to bandage any cuts on your hands.

Do not sneeze or cough over the food, and ensure that you do not touch your hair or nose.

Keep the kitchen sanitized and clean.

Safe food preparation

When preparing meat and vegetables always use separate chopping boards.

Always wash fresh fruits and vegetables. If unpeeled vegetables and fruits are to be eaten raw scrub them with a vegetable brush to remove dirt and any pesticides.

A common disinfectant called Hypochlorite (which is packaged under a variety of brand names) is used to clean raw fruit and veg. Dissolve a small amount of the disinfectant in a container of water covering the fruits and vegetables. Then wash off the food in fresh plain water before it is consumed.

Ensure that all meat is thoroughly cooked. Frozen meat should be thawed completely before cooking it. Care should be especially taken when cooking pork since some carry trichina worms which will make you ill. Fish and shellfish may contain liver or lung flukes, which will pass into the human body if the fish is not cooked thoroughly.

Protect food from flies. To prevent them from breeding see if there is any refuse around the home that needs to be cleaned up. Containers for garbage should be properly covered and disinfected.

Eat food soon after it is cooked. In hot weather harmful bacteria multiply quickly. If you want to prepare food early and eat later, refrigerate the food after cooking it and then thoroughly reheat it before serving.

Cooked food should be kept hot (above 140 F, 60 C) or cold (below 50 F, 10 C). Bacteria will grow and multiply in between these temperatures.

Eating out

At restaurants where food is served as a buffet choose foods that seem to be either very hot or very cold. avoid food that has been in room temperature for a long time in hot weather.

We all love eating well-prepared delicious food and when we prepare them correctly we will be eating safely!

Too Many Cats?

April 10th, 2010 by pacapao

Cats are becoming increasingly popular as pets these days, and a big question is, how many cats should a family have? For some people, one is more than enough, others have half a dozen or more. Here are some sure- fire ways to know when you’ve reached your limit.

You know you have too many cats when:

Your annual cat food bill is more than the combined Gross National Product of Liechtenstein, Andorra, and San Marino.

Your last three cats are named Puss, Kitty-cat, and Hey You.

You and your spouse are sleeping on the floor because there’s no more room in the bed.

The cleaning lady at the vet’s office calls you by your first name.

All your windowsills are occupied.

Your neighbors forget your last name and start referring to you as “you know, the cat people”.

You have to change the vacuum cleaner bags every week.

You’re running out of corners to put litter boxes in.

Even your coffee table has a slip cover.

The most important crop in your garden every year is catnip.

You can’t remember what a house plant looks like.

Flea collars smell good to you.

You actually understand what your cats are saying.

More than half your mail comes from Purina and Friskies.

Every year you get a personally autographed Christmas card from Morris.

Your cat door has been replaced three times.

For Mothers Day last year the kids pooled their money and bought you an electric cat brush.

You thought it was the perfect gift.

Learn How To Give Your Cat A bath

April 9th, 2010 by pacapao

Have you ever considered giving your cat a bath? Your dog and cat both require a certain amount of maintenance to keep them happy and healthy. While most cats are self-sufficient, all cats could use a little boost in the bathing department.

When it comes to cat care, very few cat owners think to give their cat a bath. A bath can help get rid of excess fur during the shedding season.

You could take your cat to the veterinarian or a professional groomer and have them give your cat a bath, but giving your cat a bath on your own isn’t all that difficult. As long as you have patience and take things slowly, the two of you can get through the ordeal in one piece.

Before you think of bathing, give your cat a good brushing. Use a soft brush or grooming glove for short haired felines. For cats with longer fur, use a wide-toothed comb. Don’t brush too hard. Cats don’t have very thick skin like their wild cousins, the big cats.

Brush out any tangles and check the cat over for any sores or abscesses. Clean the cat’s ears and trim its nails. If your cat starts to get a little antsy, take everything in stages. Start with one task, then put the cat down and come back to the next task later.

While your cat is off wandering the house and working off stress, you can get the bath ready. Make sure you have a soft towel and shampoos made for your cat at hand. Remember that your cat will be licking himself after the wash, and some soaps might have a residue that could make your cat sick if ingested.

If you can, use your kitchen sink as a tub. The sink is much easier to work with than trying to bend over a tub. Place a towel in the bottom of the sink as a mat to keep your cat from slipping. The most important thing is to give your cat a bath in a warm room so that afterwards, he’ll have a warm place to dry off.

When you’re ready to bathe your cat, put cotton balls in its ears to help keep the water out. Run some lukewarm water into the sink, but don’t fill the sink all the way. You might want to fill the sink first, since the sound of the rushing water could make your cat nervous, especially if he knows what’s coming.

Try not to restrain your cat too much either. If the cat feels like it’s being trapped, you’ll have a harder time holding it through this cat care process.

Keep talking to the cat calmly and reassuringly. Don’t yell or try to scold him if he decides not to cooperate. If you’re nervous, your cat will be nervous, too. Hissing, flattened ears and yowling are all signs that you have a very stressed kitty on your hands.

To wet the coat, pour water over your cat. You can also take a thin towel, wrap it around your cat, and wet its fur through the towel. Once the fur is wet, apply shampoo, and then rinse well. When you rinse your cat, try to avoid using the spray nozzle. If your cat didn’t like the sound of running water, the hiss of the spray won’t be calming at all.

Make sure that you get all the shampoo out of its fur. When you’re done rinsing, dry your cat by blotting instead of scrubbing. Blotting long fur is far more effective than rubbing the towel over the cat’s body.

If your cat will tolerate the noise from this cat care routine, you can use a hair dryer on the lowest setting. If you can’t use the dryer, that’s okay. Dry your cat as much as you can and let it go find a warm place to dry off.

The best advice for bathing a cat is to start while the cat is young so that they become familiar with this form of cat care. If you get your cat used to bathing early in life and make the first experience as enjoyable as you can, your cat will be more cooperative in the future.

Cupid is to strike again big time. And be sure that when he does, you’re there to give the perfect gift to back him up. Valentine’s Day is near, but don’t be discouraged and end up buying the same old gifts you’ve been giving your loved one for the last 5 years.

Listed below are some unique gift items that will most probably make cupid’s target a sure hit. Flowers and chocolates are a staple sure, but let’s give way to more fun and unforgettable gifts/gestures you could possibly give your special someone.

A drive to the outskirts of town will surely bring out a good and hearty conversation. Give your loved one the gift of experiencing something new this time, and learning alongside it.

Search through the internet to find the nearest getaway spot from the city. And while you’re at it, look for the best place to have a sumptuous breakfast in, you could try an inn as the sun unfurls its glory while you two sip coffee or hot chocolate.

Gadgets or car accessories and/or tools are perfect gifts to give to your man. Guys are more for the practicality of a gift. Try getting him something that can make his work easier, an electronic planner maybe.

When it comes to buying something you’re unfamiliar with, the internet can be of great assistance. Peruse through scores of “e-merchants” and you’ll surely get a good buy. This might come off unusual to you but once you find the coolest digital watch or just a useful contraption for him, you’ll beam with pride with the appreciation he’ll give you.

Girls love jewelery no doubt about that. And these jewels come in so many forms, varieties and what not. But a simple golden bracelet will go a long way in pleasing your woman. Pick one that’s not too flashy, nor too simple to be beyond notice.

Technology and innovation now allow us to transform your old, bland jewellery to something more interesting. By putting charms to your dangling watch or bracelet, it’s almost as if you’ve procured something new. You might have been hearing about these ideas before, why not try them yourself and see the magic it will bring to your Valentine’s Day. Cupid will surely be pleased.
